General Church News
Several years ago, C.S. Lewis wrote a book entitled “Surprised by Joy”. Though it currently sits on my bedside table, I won’t pretend I’ve read it. If I could borrow his phrase and wrench it out of context, the title does seem to characterize the relationship many people have with joy. In their lives stress is the feeling that doesn’t surprise. Stress seems to be the sure and ubiquitous companion, but joy is “hit or miss” and even surprising. It doesn’t have to be this way. The path to joy begins with our response to one vital question. Join us this Sunday as we begin a new series examining Jesus thoughts on joy, completeness, and incompleteness.
How can we change the world? What can really be done about poverty, hunger, sex trafficking, and violence? Can anything be done? The problems are complex and widespread. Many individuals who want to have an impact feel paralyzed. Jesus taught that we can break free of the paralysis – that we can change and the world can change. Join us this Sunday as we continue in our series, “If I Could Change the World”.
| Be sure to mark your calendars for July 30 for MedShare. MedShare is an organization that sends surplus medical supplies to countries in need. We volunteer at MedShare to help sort items so that they can be sent out. We’ll be working 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and it’s a very simple but very important way to serve. |
Men, join us this coming Sunday night for Bocci Ball on the church lawn. If you can come, email Kyle so that we can be sure to have enough Bocci sets. Man Night begins June 12 and concludes on August 7 with the presentation of the Magnificent Man Trophy (More details below on the MMT). Here’s the tentative schedule:
Magnificent Man Trophy will be awarded at the conclusion of man night on Aug. 7. The man with the most points wins. Points will be awarded for: showing up; best over and under prognostication on Braves game; 3 points for eating Death wings, 2 for Three miles Island, 1 for Hot, bocci and bowling victories. Points will be deducted for eating vegetables on BYOM night, crying during Bocci Ball or for disrespecting Captain America. Bonus points if you dress up like a super-hero on Captain America Movie night, but we may not let you sit with the rest of us. |
Ladies, join us tomorrow night, June 21, at the church building at 7 p.m. for “Swap 7″. Bring seven of the same item (bags of homemade cookies or crafts, plants, dollar store items, candy) and do not spend more than seven dollars. We’ll swap items and everyone will go home with seven different items. More importantly, you’ll get to know some of the other ladies at Veritas. Summer Sisters is open to all the ladies at Veritas Church. This is a great opportunity to get to know other women at Veritas. Here’s the schedule for 2011 (all events on Tuesdays at 7 at the church unless otherwise noted):
